A Program of Leadership Texarkana

Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre cast visited Texarkana in June of 1944

They kicked off the 5th War Loan Drive shortly after the D-Day invasions on June 6th. There is a recording of that performance from June 12th on the stage of the Paramount Theatre (now the Perot) and a digitized manuscript for the radio play. Follow the link here. That performance included a broadcast of an address from FDR and a speech by Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau. On June 14th as part of the Orson Welles Almanac, there was a “Special Texarkana Broadcast”. This skit revolves around a fish peddler who causes a war between Texas and Arkansas.
