2019 Heroes for Children Honoree by Texas State Board of Education

Ashley Gibbs was recently named the recipient of the 2019 Heroes for Children Award given by the Texas State Board of Education. This is a prestigious award given to only 15 awardees statewide for outstanding services and support given to their school community, staff, and students of Texas. The 15 awardees represent 15 districts in Texas; Ashley represents District 9 which includes Bowie County and 29 other Northeast Texas counties. Recipients were honored during the State Board of Education general meeting on September 13, 2019 in Austin, TX. 

Established in 1994, the award is designed to recognize excellence in advocacy for education and to highlight the many outstanding volunteers whose efforts represent significant contributions to public school education in Texas. Gibbs’s name will be engraved on a plaque along with other recipients to be permanently displayed at the Texas Education Agency.

Gibbs began her volunteerism with Pleasant Grove as the Pleasant Grove Elementary School Campus Coordinator through PG Connection (Parent Teacher Organization). She is currently the Pleasant Grove Intermediate School Campus Coordinator, Pleasant Grove Education Foundation Vice President of Development. In 2018 Gibbs served as the co-chair of the PG Political Action Committee to pass the $19.9 million bond which provides funding for the Margaret Fischer Davis Elementary School, security enhancements throughout the district, and upgrades to district technology. In addition, Gibbs has donated over 1,000 hours to the district as an organizer of Teacher Appreciation Week, Texas Public Schools Week, Hawk Hustle, and many other district events. A graduate of Pleasant Grove High School and Texas A&M University- Texarkana, Gibbs and her husband, Landry, have a daughter, Reese (12), 10-year-old triplets: Cannon, Griffin, and Palmer, and two dogs: Scout and Hawk.
