Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties
While many associate literacy with the ability to read or write, the Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties operates under a broad definition of literacy that includes any vital knowledge or skills that a person needs in order to be productive in today’s society. Our tutors teach basic academic skills like reading and math, but they also tailor instruction to meet a variety of our adult learners’ needs. Computer and financial literacy, health and wellness, and workforce preparation are popular content areas, and our tutors even recently helped an adult study for the written part of the drivers license test. All of our services are completely free.
Staffed by only two employees (Jenny Walker and Kristina Jones), the Literacy Council relies on the power of a strong team of volunteers to serve our adult learners. In addition to tutors, we also need help planning events, managing our social media, and supporting general office duties. There is a place for everyone to serve! For information on supporting the Literacy Council with your time or resources email Executive Director Jenny Walker at jenny@literacytxk.org.
Thanks to the Literacy Council for leading the way!
