Did you know that Hart’s on Broad hair salon and gift shop at 223 E, Broad St in Texarkana, AR historic district, was originally a harness company, and has one of Texarkana’s first theaters on their second floor? To this day there is still the old theater upstairs with a small stage for a band at one end and a full length stage on the end for performers. The adjoining room has four small dressing rooms and a ticket booth.
Built between 1888 & 1899, by Louis Lawson, this two-story building was first known as the Lawson Building. Occupying the street level area with his own business, Edwards Harness Company, he kept Texarkana supplied with harness & tack in the days of wagons and carriage & horses. Other businesses that occupied this building between 1910 till 1951, included a physician’s office, conductors Hall, second floor hosted many social events in the 1900’s, A.O.U.W & I. O.O.F. halls, Lewis Brothers Hardware Store, The Southern Café & Grill in the late 1940’s, and Hart’s Cut Rate Drug Store in 1951.
